Homemade Za’atar Spice Blend

Za’atar is a versatile Middle Eastern spice blend that can bring lots of flavor to your everyday meals. Today I’m gonna share with you my homemade Za’atar spice blend that you can alter according to your preferences.

Whatever you’re making, be it fresh salad, beans, chickpeas or tofu, Za’atar will add more depth and brightness to the dish. Sprinkle it on top of hummus or baba ganoush, if you’re feeling extra special.

My Za’atar spice blend is heavy on sesame seeds and thyme, therefore it is full of toasted and earthy flavors. If you like it to be more bright and tangy, simply add more sumac.

I’m gonna share some recipes with Za’atar shortly, so stay tuned!

If using raw sesame seeds, toast them first on a dry skillet and let them cool completely.

Add sesame seeds and pinch of salt into a mortar and crush them slightly to release the flavor.

Now add dried herbs and again grind everything slightly with a pestle.

Finally add ground sumac and mix everything thoroughly.

Store in a jar for up to 1 month.
